| Background: |
Robert's first job was in the cotton mills of North Carolina.
He has been making things with his hands as far back as he can remember. He says
he won an award for one of his drawings when he was seven years old. In high school
he made leather items for friends and started painting. He also learned to carve
and made a chess set, which he still has, from an old two-by-four. His mother
taught him to sew on her old pedal machine. He has made "a lot of furniture and
a little bit of music.". He started making a full time living from silverware
assemblages in 1991 after being laid off from two consecutive jobs. He says "art
has transformed my life and gave me back my soul, and I try to express and celebrate
this transformation in all that I do". Robert never thought of himself as a folk
artist but so many collectors have insisted that he is, he's beginning to agree
with the term. |
